Badcock Furniture Retailer Interview

The Regatta Collection

Badcock Furniture has a long history of great service. They have been in operation since 1904. That makes well over 100 years of treating people right in the furniture industry. Recently, LoveToKnow Furniture was able to speak with Sarah Markus, Communications Coordinator from Badcock Home Furniture about how the company got its start and what makes it special.

About Badcock Furniture

Badcock logo

How did Badcock Furniture get started? Still family-owned and operated, we were founded originally as a furniture and household goods store in Mulberry, Florida. During the Depression, Wogan Stanhope paid a commission to route salesmen, who sold and collected payments on furniture inventory that was sold on credit.

How many stores do you currently have?

We have over 300 stores in eight states throughout the southeast.

We recently (in 2008) opened our first store in Virginia, our eighth state. Serviced by our Mebane, North Carolina distribution center, we have the fulfillment capacity to operate more stores in that area.

What makes your stores unique?

We have a unique business model. Over 80 percent of our stores are individually owned and operated. Our store owners (we call them dealers) are entrepreneurs from the local community. This local "root" allows our stores to connect with their customers.

Badcock Customers and Products

What styles of furniture do you carry?

A variety. Our most popular furniture styles are traditional and casual design elements. We offer mid-priced furniture and offer flexible in-store credit options.

What furniture trends do you see?

More and more, we see furniture that is multi-functional and designed to accommodate smaller spaces.

Has the economy affected people's buying habits?

As with most retailers, we've seen a decrease in sales. However, we are hopeful to see a boost as consumers become more confident in the state of the economy. To help customers feel more secure, we offer a range of additional product and service warranties, insurance and protection plans.

Who is your primary customer?

Our customer profile varies throughout our southeast territory. One commonality is that they are looking for a quality product at an affordable price.

Can customers buy online or only at a showroom?

We have a selection of merchandise available for purchase exclusively online. Items not available for purchase online can be ordered at a local Badcock Furniture store.

Badcock Furniture carries a full line of bedroom, living room and dining room furniture. They also carry appliances, accessories, floor coverings and even lawn equipment and patio furniture. All are carefully selected to help make your house a home.

Badcock dealerships are different than a standard furniture franchise in that dealers have the benefits of ownership without the high cost associated with buying into a franchise. This allows local entrepreneurs to run a proven business within their own community, where they are more likely to be successful.

Badcock Furniture has a long history of providing customers with high quality products at affordable prices. Even as many companies have gone out of business, Badcock has continued to expand and improve. Their reputation for continued growth and stability assures that Badcock is one company that will endure for many years to come.

If you are not fortunate to live in an area that has a local Badcock showroom, you can shop for some items online. You can also click on the link at the top of the page that says "Shop Online" to view a list on online exclusives. Shipping is via FedEx ground and can be made anywhere in the United States excluding APO and FPO addresses. Standard shipping rates will apply and can be checked through the Badcock website.
