Triple bunk beds are a great way to add an additional bed in a room without requiring the floor space for three beds.

Configurations for Triple Bunk Beds

There are several configurations available for bunk beds with three beds. Just like double bunk beds, the three mattresses are twin size. Typically, the bunk beds are arranged with two beds on the top level, forming an L-shape. The third bed is placed below one of the top bunks on the floor level. Some designs offer an under-the-bed drawer system to give additional storage space.

Desks and Dressers

Other configurations allow for a chest of drawers to be placed underneath one of the top bunks. Another style utilizes the space similarly to a loft bed configuration with the desk underneath one of the upper beds. The use of a desk underneath the bunk bed helps to free up needed floor space. If two more desks are needed, then this configuration will help ensure there is ample space left within the bedroom to accommodate the desks.

Drawers and Closet

An L-shaped configuration allows you to optimize and utilize the open space below the other bunk bed. This means you may opt to use a loft bed style of drawer system, storage bins, or even a coat closet offered by some companies. On the end of the third bed placed on the floor, you could add another stack of drawers or even put a computer desk as a way to conserve space. A drawer system or shelving unit will give you must needed additional storage space.

Futon for Additional Seating

Another design option that might appeal to older children is one that has two twin beds positioned on the upper loft and instead of a desk, a futon is used underneath the open space. A futon is a very versatile piece of furniture for this design because it can be used as a couch during the day and pulled out for a fourth bed at night. This is excellent for older children who use the bedroom for playing games or watching TV. Usually a triple bunk bed discourages sleepovers due to space considerations, but a futon makes it more likely that a friend or two can stay over for the night.

Three Stacked Beds

A three-stacked bunk bed system is probably the simplest configuration for bunk beds and will take up the least amount of floor space. The first bed frame sets directly onto the floor. The other two beds simply stack on top of it. By placing the first bed onto the floor, the headroom for each bed is sufficient, especially for the top bunk bed.

Trundle and Bunk Beds

A trundle bunk bed actually looks like a typical double bunk bed with a full-length drawer underneath the floor height bunk bed. The surprise is when you pull the drawer out to reveal another twin-sized bed. This kind of hidden bed is called a trundle bed. The trundle typically was on casters and historically was smaller than the top bed. Servants often slept on trundle beds to be easily accessible in case needed during the middle of the night. In the modern world, having a trundle bed, in addition to the bunk beds, affords an additional bed for guests. This pull out feature is a great space-saver during the day when other activities are going on in the bedroom, such a game playing or school work.

Creating Your Own Configuration

Most bunk beds are placed in a corner. You can increase your floor space further by combining three loft beds. In this manner you can place three computer desks and a dresser in the space underneath the bed. The beds will line up on one wall and part of another, but the amount of floor space saved will give more room in the bedroom. You may have space enough for additional furniture or seating.

Advantages of Bunk Beds: Triple Beds

If you have three children sleeping in one room, trying to squeeze three twin beds into a typical child's bedroom can be difficult and nearly impossible without making the room appear overly cluttered. Even the combination of a traditional bunk bed plus a single twin bed will take up more space than a triple bed configuration.

Shopping Choices

You can find triple bunk beds in all kinds of woods as well as metal designs.
