Interview With Kevin Booker
What has been the key to your 40 years of success?
We have a wonderful group of employees who make our customers their top priority. We strive to offer the best furniture at the best value, but the success we've enjoyed all comes down to treating the customer as we would like to be treated.
How do you notify your customers of any special events or sales in the store?
We advertise heavily through television, newspaper, and radio. We also send mailers to our customers for special events. We are in the process of developing our website to allow us to use our customers' e-mail to notify them of special events and savings opportunities.
What are some of the top-selling items in your store?
Currently our best selling categories are casual dining, master bedrooms, entertainment units for new electronics, leather and motion sofas and sectionals, and mattress sets. We also sell a tremendous amount of accessories including lamps, area rugs, pictures and accent pieces that allow our customers to fully complete their room settings.
What brands do customers like best?
We carry many of the top brands in the industry, such as Broyhill, Hooker, Craftmaster, Universal, Kincaid, Berkline, Bradington - Young, Pulaski, Ashley / Millenium, Legacy Classics, Restonic Mattresses, GE Appliances, LG televisions, and coming this fall, Paula Deen Home! Our buyers are not primarily concerned with brand. Our first objective is to supply our customers with choices that represent quality and value regardless of brand.
What advice can you give someone shopping for furniture for the first time?
Relax, come to J&J Furniture and let our professional sales associates take the stress out of first-time furniture shopping.
If something is not able to be found in your store, are you able to do a special order for the customer?
Absolutely! Custom orders are a big part of our business. There are many ways to personalize your furniture. Fabrics, frames, finishes... The choices are yours!
If you are delivering furniture to someone's home, what preparations should they make in advance to make the delivery go smoothly?
We just ask that the customer have the area cleared for their new furniture. We take care of everything else.
What are some of the latest trends in furniture?
Although we sell a lot of furniture in traditional styles, we are seeing a definite uptick in customers looking for cleaner lines with transitional or contemporary styles.
You have five showroom locations; do they all carry the same merchandise?
Each of our five showrooms stock a unique mix of our entire furniture lineup. While there is crossover between our showrooms, they all have a unique flavor and offer a number of different products.
How often do you change the furniture and accessories in your showroom?
We attend four international furniture markets and two electronic and appliance trade shows each year. Our big seasonal changes are in the spring and fall each year. We also bring in new product between markets to keep things fresh. There is always something new and exciting at J&J Furniture!
